Economist: Zero inflation unlikely in Argentina

Economist Enrique Szewach warned that the goal of achieving a monthly inflation rate starting with zero is unlikely for the remainder of the year and agreed with the official view on the impact of the correction of relative prices. According to his explanation, the economy is going through a process of reordering price variables that directly impacts the monthly indicator and limits the possibilities for an immediate drop. In an interview with Radio Rivadavia, Szewach stated that “if (inflation) starts with one,” it’s a “tie.” In his view, the country is facing the consequences of a previous imbalance: “Argentina is still dealing with changes in relative prices in the sense that there are still tariff adjustments to be made.” He attributed this situation to “inheriting a disaster in terms of public service prices” and to increases that were postponed last year due to the electoral context. When comparing the situation with previous administrations, Szewach maintained: “We have the same inflation rate as Kicillof with better-placed prices.” The analyst detailed that in previous periods, similar levels of inflation were achieved while maintaining a “managed exchange rate” and frozen tariffs, tools that are not used in the current scheme. For the rest of the year, the economist considered that the general context prevents achieving the government's most optimistic goals. “It's difficult for inflation to start with zero at any point this year, beyond maybe a month giving you 0.99,” the specialist concluded on the difficulty of stabilizing prices in the short term.
